Our Society of Art is reaching out to all artists willing to listen, take notice and submit.
[If you have never done this before – remember: the first time is always the hardest!
Submitting an entry to one contest – win or lose (and everyone does both) sets you to the format guidelines for the future attempts. Just save the file (or print an extra to save) then you can alter it to fit the next calling that attracts you.
Be open minded, patient, prompt to the deadlines but never, Never, EVER set your mind on the thought of awaiting the reply. It is too unnecessarily stressful. Just move on to finding or doing another project – stay busy, and accept the answer when it arrives. We all lose more than win – if you never try you MAY never lose but, then again, you will never EVER win. The satisfaction of triumph is very fulfilling.]

So, at least try… …

Call for Art Submissions

Deadline February 28, 2007
ArtXchange gallery in Pioneer Square is pleased to announce our first juried show. The exhibition will run for two months, from May 3 through June 29, 2007. Opening reception will be held on First Thursday, May 3, 2007. A second party/reception will be held on First Thursday, June 7, 2007.

Gallery Mission: ArtXchange aims to inspire cultural exploration, the expansion of global community, and the exchange of ideas through art, film, and photography.

Eligibility: Artists whose work embodies the spirit of contemporary culture and global community. All media - painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film/video, mixed media, and installation. Artwork submitted should adhere to or enhance the ArtXchange gallery mission - how that is interpreted is up to the artist. A visit to our gallery is strongly encouraged to experience the uniqueness of our space. Our website can be found at www.artxchange.org.

How to Enter: Submit 3 -5 digital photographs, resume, and artist's statement to Apply2ArtXchange@gmail.com. Especially appreciated would be an artist statement which explains how your work is influenced/inspired by contemporary global culture and cultural exchange. If you choose to send us materials by regular USPS mail, we will not be returning your proposal/materials, so please do not send originals to ArtXchange.

Acceptance: Artists will be notified of acceptance by March 16, 2007. Number of works accepted into exhibition will depend on media, size, and number of accepted entries.

Commission: 50/50% artist/gallery split on any sales of works accepted into exhibition. In addition, artists selected for show may be considered for possible future gallery relationship with ArtXchange.

Redmond, Washington Call for Public Art: Interactive Musical Sculptures

The City of Redmond Arts Commission in Redmond, Washington is seeking
artists to design, produce, and install a sculpture that can act as a
musical instrument for use by the public. Priority will be given to a
piece or pieces that are interactive with environmental elements (rain,
wind, etc.). The sculpture(s) will be placed outdoors in Grass Lawn Park
in an unsupervised environment. It/they should be durable and able to be
played without any unattached pieces. The budget for this project is
$11,000 and is funded through the Percent for Art program. For more

to rac@redmond.gov. The deadline is March 16, 2007.
The City of Redmond Arts Commission is seeking artists to create artwork
on the exterior of the renovated Public Safety Building in Redmond,
Washington. Artists can create mosaic(s), or create images from tiles,
ceramics or any other suitable medium in four areas on the exterior of the
building. The budget for this project is $12,250 is available for the art
project, which includes design, fabrication, installation,
shipping/transportation, some lighting elements, and Washington State
sales tax. The art project is a 1% for art project and is funded through
the Percent for Art. For more information, please go to

deadline is March 16, 2007.
Redmond Outdoor Sculpture Call for Regional Artists
The City of Redmond Arts Commission and Independent Curator Jess Van
Nostrand seek proposals for the 2007-08 Redmond Outdoor Sculpture
Exhibition. Up to fourteen sculptures will be selected. A $500 honorarium
is paid for sculptures suitable for a 15-month long exhibition. Artists
must be able to provide their own transportation and do their own
installation.

be emailed to rac@redmond.gov. The deadline is March 16, 2007.

The Greenwood-Phinney ArtWalk will be May 11 and 12, 2007. This festive neighborhood event features art in 50+ sites on Greenwood and Phinney Avenues between 65th and 87th Streets. The ArtWalk is open to all 2D and 3D visual artists in the greater Puget Sound area. An application form and additional information is available at www.greenwoodphinneyartwalk.com . Wing Luke Asian Museum is seeking artists for several art plan projects for
the new museum in the historic East Kong Yick Building. Requests for
Qualifications (RFQs) will be posted on the site, along with floor plans,
elevations, renderings and photos related to the projects. Please check the

King County based artists, ensembles and arts organizations are invited to
apply to be part of 2007 SITE-SPECIFIC/King County Performance Network. The
2007 season continues the success of 2006 SITE-SPECIFIC, which commissioned
16 artists to create site-specific performances for 14 communities. In 2007,
artists are again encouraged to explore non-traditional sites or unexpected
locations in one or more King County communities and to create work that is
specific or relevant to that locale. These performances may be publicized in
advance or they may be designed to catch audiences by surprise.

"The Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council is establishing a Juried Artists Roster of pre-qualified artists who will be considered for public art projects, including site specific art commissions, architecturally integrated art elements, and master plan and design team consultancies. This is very appealing!
Personally, I have always preferred acrylic. Growing up with my mother using oil on canvas, my opinion of the odor took rule. But, this “opened another door.”
It IS “the only fine art paint that dries when you want it too.” As well as non-toxic and with absolutely No Odor!

One Saturday, at Daniel Smith’s main store in Seattle, I was waiting between Demo’s in the “lobby/coffee spot.” As usual I got into some wonderful conversations with fellow artists. One of them ending with a very nice lady asking if I had ever tried this paint. I had never really heard much about it before. When she mentioned oil - I thought of ODOR. She insisted that I try a sample kit, as she had an extra. She was very adamant so I reluctantly accepted it. With the thought of relaying whatever I learn.

[The picture I decided to do was from a dance competition for two children. (That I know from the HOME Program, where I teach my youngest son.) I “wrestled it away” from a parent.]

The jars included in the kit were; Titanium White, Phthalo Green 02, Pyrrole Red 02, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue and a Glazing Gel.
(This could become a full article of review!)
The blending and quality were amazing.
Black, although not included, was achieved very successfully by combining brown and blue.
It is fantastic! Soft shading could be attained much more easily than expected.
The selected canvas fit rather neatly into the oven, which did overheat a few points. This caused tiny bubbles to rise on the girl’s face. After poking them with a pin, and rubbing with the back of my thumbnail they virtually disappeared.
After “rinsing” the brush with 90% rubbing alcohol, dabbing on a paper towel, it somewhat thinned the paint. This helped with the subtle shading on the boy’s shirt and #’tag as well as the girl’s cheeks, lips and eye shadow. When wanting to protect an area from smear, or prepare for another coat it merely had to be baked for two minutes at ~265F to set.
[As said this could become an article!]
It was wonderful to try, and very little was used. The jars are still 80-95% full.
Acrylic as a background base was applied – but most was covered.

It is easy to say that this was a success!

Life is Good!

[My apology for lack of contact and updating events.
Our odd loss of electricity in Newcastle became more of a disaster than anticipated.
When the power returned we learned the bitter truth: the modem was not plugged into a surge protector.
It seems that it was overlooked when the room was rearranged and plugged straight into the outlet.
It was a quick death - that took TWO WEEKS to replace.

Don't let that happen to you!]

Monotype with acrylics

EAFA's "Celebration of the Arts" in Action!

May is one of the busiest months of the year.
The number of overlapping events and obligations is staggering!

The fabulous art show at Trilogy got off to a great start.
Best of Show was Elaine Wilk with “I dare you” an Acrylic Collage.
The Show will be running through June 9th.
Please come and see - it is quite a treat.

This illustration is "Whose Shoes?" A Prismacolor® pencil portrait which was accepted in the show and done by… well…ME.

A committee is also currently laying out the base plan for Newcastle Days.
It is actually beginning to look real!

Almost neglected to mention the PGA ART 57th Annual Exhibition in Tacoma.

It is being held at the Bronze Works Gallery (which is also a "studio/shop")
2506 South Fawcett, Tacoma 98402.

The show will run until June 9th.

Of course, I am biased... I have two pieces that were accepted.
Including one of my Cat Ladies, shown here, titled; Taken Aback.

Another entertaining factor was the manner in which the exhibition was placed amid the display of bronze sculpture. Breathtaking!

She got a preview while dropping off her work and claims that it is Fabulous!
